Classical education is a traditional approach to education that has been used for centuries and is often embraced by homeschooling families. It is based on the idea that certain educational practices and content have enduring value and should form the foundation of a well-rounded education. Classical education typically focuses on teaching students how to think and learn, rather than just what to think and learn. It’s often divided into three main stages:

  1. The Grammar Stage: In this stage, which usually covers elementary school, students focus on memorizing facts, learning a language, and developing a foundation of knowledge. This is when students absorb basic information and develop language skills.
  2. The Logic (or Dialectic) Stage: During the middle school years, students enter the logic stage, where they learn to think critically and analyze information. They explore the relationships between facts and ideas, and they begin to ask “why” and “how” questions.
  3. The Rhetoric Stage: In high school, students move into the rhetoric stage, where they learn to communicate effectively and persuasively. They are encouraged to express their own thoughts clearly and eloquently, often through writing and public speaking.

Classical education places a strong emphasis on the study of classical languages (such as Latin or Greek), literature, history, and philosophy. The aim is to create well-rounded, intellectually curious individuals who can think critically and express themselves eloquently.

When applied to homeschooling, classical education provides a structured and rigorous framework for parents to educate their children. It often involves the use of classical textbooks, Socratic discussions, and the study of classical literature. Homeschooling families may also incorporate modern resources and technology to supplement their classical curriculum.

It’s important to note that classical education is just one of many homeschooling approaches. Homeschooling allows for flexibility, and parents can choose the educational method that aligns best with their values, teaching style, and their children’s learning needs.
