Deciding Upon a Career

Career day helps students connect what they are learning in homeschool with opportunities for work. We encourage our multiple business interviewees to share their workplace, job, education, and skills that are required for success. Homeschooled students will view a compiled online video to gather information regarding a desired industry and the career options it provides. 

Choosing a career is a significant decision, and students need to ask themselves a series of questions to help them make an informed choice.

Here are some key questions to consider:

  1. What are my interests and passions?
    • What subjects or activities do I enjoy the most?
    • What are my hobbies and things I like to do in my free time?
  2. What are my strengths and skills?
    • What am I naturally good at?
    • What skills have I developed through education and experience?
  3. What are my values and priorities?
    • What is most important to me in life (e.g., family, financial stability, creativity, helping others)?
    • What kind of work environment or company culture do I prefer?
  4. What are my long-term goals?
    • Where do I see myself in 5, 10, or 20 years?
    • What kind of lifestyle do I want to have?
  5. What is the job market like for potential careers?
    • Are there job opportunities in the field I’m interested in?
    • What is the projected job growth and demand for that career?
  6. What is the earning potential and salary range?
    • What is the average salary for professionals in this field?
    • Does the earning potential align with my financial goals?
  7. What education or training is required?
    • What level of education is necessary (e.g., bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, certifications)?
    • How long will it take to obtain the required qualifications?
  8. What is the work-life balance like in this career?
    • How many hours a week are typically required?
    • Is there flexibility in terms of work hours and location?
  9. What is the job satisfaction and job security?
    • Are people in this career generally satisfied with their work?
    • Is the field prone to automation or outsourcing?
  10. What are the potential career advancement opportunities?
    • Are there opportunities for growth and promotions in this field?
    • Can I specialize in a particular area over time?
  11. Can I gain practical experience through internships or part-time jobs?

By asking these questions, students can better understand their goals and preferences, which will help them make a more informed decision when choosing a career path. Career choices are not permanent. The world of work is changing rapidly. It is possible to change as your interests and circumstances evolve.
