The Early Start Denver Model

The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based early intervention approach designed for young children, typically between 12 and 48 months old, who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Developed by Dr. Sally Rogers and Dr. Geraldine Dawson, it integrates principles from applied behavior analysis (ABA) with developmental and relationship-based approaches.

Here are the key components of the ESDM:

  • Focus on Early Intervention: It is specifically designed for toddlers and preschoolers, recognizing that early intervention can have a significant impact on a child’s development.
  • Naturalistic Teaching: ESDM emphasizes learning through everyday activities and play. It uses a naturalistic setting, often in the child’s home or a classroom, making it more engaging and relevant to the child’s experiences.
  • Developmental Goals: The model focuses on helping children progress through typical developmental stages. It includes social skills, language, cognitive abilities, and motor skills goals.
  • Parent Involvement: Parents play a critical role in ESDM. They are encouraged to participate in the therapy and learn how to use the techniques in daily interactions with their child.
  • Relationship-Based: ESDM emphasizes building a strong, positive relationship between the child and therapist (or parent). This emotional connection helps create a supportive learning environment.
  • Individualized Approach: Each child receives a customized intervention plan based on their strengths, needs, and developmental level.
  • Play and Joint Activities: The therapy often involves joint activities between the child and adult, promoting social interaction, communication, and play skills.

When applied consistently, ESDM has been shown to improve cognitive, language, and social skills in young children with autism. It’s especially valued for its child-friendly and engaging methods, which make learning enjoyable for young children.
